The ban on public land grazing

Overgrazing has turned much of the region¨s grassland into sandy desert. This is why the government has issued a ban on animal grazing on all public grasslands.Farmers must keep their sheep in their yards and either purchase or grow food, thus dramatically increasing the cost of raising sheep and further impoverishing the farmers.By financing the acquisition of equipment to collect animal feed and to stock it, our programs have helped farmers to adapt their sheep raising techniques so that their small agribusinesses can be sustainable without the use of public grassland.

    Fighting against desertification.

Located just below Inner Mongolia, Ningxia is part of China¨s arid north-western region situated in the centralAsian steppe. By setting up fences in order to prevent sand shifting, our desertification control programs have permitted to increase vegetation coverage.

    New sources of energy.

Peasant mainly use coal and chopped trees to produce energy to cook food, two methods which are far from being energy friendly.

However, there exist some ecological and cheap ways to produce energy in rural areas. One of them is the fermentation of human and animal excrements which, by chemical reaction, produces energy. The problem is that rural villages usually lack the means to equip themselves with decent toilet system and animal excrement collecting systems.

By financing the creation of toilets and piggeries, our development programs have permitted collecting human and animal excrements and therefore producing energy while respecting the environment.

    New houses.

The committed and long term implementation of our programs have contributed to the slow raising of rural people¨s standard of living. This is illustrated by the construction of new houses, made of higher quality materials.

Some new houses are being used as village meetings halls. These halls give villagers common spaces to discuss and decide about the implementation of development programs as well as to hold cultural activities (singing and dancing performances, playing cards competitions, reading contests, etc´) This contributes to the furthering of villagers¨ empowerment, and permit to widen their scope of social interactions.

    Access to water within villages.

People living in such an arid area as the county of Yanchi, used to have to get water very far from where they lived. While they were taking their livestock grazing, they took the opportunity to go to the closest well and bring water back home.

By financing the building of pipelines and the drilling of wells, our programs permit to give access to water to thousands of peasants.
